A quick rundown.

This is where we're starting from:

Regular Sources of Income:

Job at Sony Computer Entertainment, care of Nelson: $14/hour at 37 hours/week.
Job at Starbucks Coffee: $9.50/hour at 17 hours/week, plus weekly tips at ~$25.
Internet endeavors: $nothing, yet!

Expenses:
Rent: $600/month to share a studio.
Nine monthly credit card bills: ~$300/month.
Transportation on train and bus: $100/month.
Utilities (internet/water): $80/month.
Storage unit: $70/month.
Cell phone: $30/month.

Debts:
Estimated student loan debt: $75,000.

Estimated credit card debt: $13,000.
Debt to ex-girlfriend: $1900.
Debt to George, a friend: $100.

Recent candidates for accusations of idiocy:
Trip to Tokyo, Japan: $550 airfare, $150 accommodations, ~$150 food and drink?

Forthcoming causes for worry:
- Iceland! Food? Bills? Will I even be able to buy myself a single beer?!
- Money to store my broken car somewhere? (Repairing is currently OOTQ.)
- Moving truck rental
- New storage unit costs
- Where will I live when I get back? How long until I can afford a rent payment?
- September: need to get to Japan to present lecture at DiGRA games research conference.

Philip Sharp is Clearly Broke.

Welcome to clearlybroke.com.

The title is a pun on the idea of monetary transparency. Transparency is a hot corporate trend at the moment, with companies like Google ostensibly keeping no secrets and posting all activity via blogs, forums, and so on.

Similarly, I aim to post to the world all the worries of my crazy financial life. I have money problems! Look for yourself!

welcome
i can has lotto plz k thx

Money is considered by most to be a private matter, but my debts and worries have become hyperbole to the point of humor. Indeed, money interests most people, and if you (shame on you!) have ever peered around your friend's shoulder at an ATM to see what kinda scrilla s/he may or may not be ballin' with -- then you may very well enjoy this blog!

I am curious to see the side-effects of transparency. For example: I'm quite certain that, thanks to this blog alone, I will never again be qualified for a credit card or loan.

Look forward to some very interesting bills, bank statements, and so on.

In addition, I will post quasi-philosophical thoughts on spending, debt, and tricks for quick money-making -- as well as open up the blog for people to contribute their own tips.

Get-rich-quick schemes, real-estate seminars, E-bay tutorials and the like will all be given a sound scoffing and figurative kick in the nuts. (Read again: NO!) What I *WILL* post are ways I have stretched my budgets, along with all the problems I have created for myself in doing so.

Have fun!
... and... hey, I need bus fare home...
